OUR STORIES: COLLECTING AND PERFORMING HISTORY
Collecting our stories – of self, family and friends – is a powerful witness to what has gone before us. Many of the most important episodes in our family or personal lives were never written down but rather live in memory, told again and again around the dinner table. Other stories have never been told aloud at all.
In this workshop, noted playwright and director Vali Forrister will teach you how to “mine” these stories through self-reflective writing and oral history collection. You will learn the basics of conducting an oral history interview and what to do once you’ve got the raw material.
Whether you are interested in self-expression or discovery of deeper truths of your family or community, this class will give you the tools to get started. The class will work together to create a performance piece based on the oral histories collected during this class. The piece will receive a public performance at Actors Bridge.
