CRITICS ARE RAVING:
“Once upon a time, there was a daring professional theater company known as Actors Bridge Ensemble. And this company was widely respected for its thought-provoking works and commitment to artful collaboration. “And while ABE’s current production of Meg Miroshnik’s “The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls” cannot promise any “happily ever afters,” it does mark another fine chapter in the company’s excellent 20th anniversary season.” — Amy Stumpfl, The Tennessean
“Lowe’s artful rendition of The Fairy Tales Lives of Russian Girls is richly told and captivatingly acted by her estimable ensemble of actors. With vibrant intensity, the six women immediately rivet the audience’s attention to the imaginative tale delivered onstage.” — Jeffrey Ellis,BroadwayWorld

Once upon a time—in 2005—a twenty-year-old girl named Annie returned to her native Russia to brush up on the language and lose her American accent. Underneath a glamorous Post-Soviet Moscow studded with dangerously high heels, designer bags, and luxe fur coats, she discovers an enchanted motherland teeming with evil stepmothers, wicked witches, and ravenous bears. Annie must learn how to become the heroine of a story more mysterious and treacherous than any childhood fairytale: her own. This subversive story haunts the audience and carries a powerful message for young women living in a world where not everything ends up happily ever after.
The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls is the 2016 collaborative production between ABE and Belmont University Department of Theatre and Dance. It is directed by Leah Lowe, chair of the Vanderbilt University Theatre Department and board member at ABE. The cast includes ABE ensemble members Rachel Agee and CJ Tucker and Belmont BFA performance majors Ashley Joye, Johnna McCarthy, Austin Williams and Madeline Marconi.
“Russian culture is rife with myth and magic. ‘The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls’ takes place in a similar kind of dreamland. In this dreamland, people sleep with one eye open.” – New York Times
“To be admired for its energy, eclectic imaginative drive, and powerful message to and for young women. This is anything but a tame, graceful one hour and forty minute journey. Instead, it jolts one’s sensibilities. – Talkin Broadway
“An evil stepmother. A wicked witch. A ravenous bear. Separated siblings. Young girls in peril. Meg Miroshnik’s inventively comic… plugs these mythological figures into post-Soviet Russia and adroitly subverts them.” – Seattle Times
